More Information
The padded bar rests behind your neck while you hold the handles and push your arms forward, so the band supports the curve of the neck as you move your head back through extension. Red is the light pull and blue the medium, about 11kg.
Who it's for
It's for active neck extension and strengthening exercises, done at home or in the clinic. Denneroll describe a session as about five minutes. Your chiropractor tells you whether it suits you and which resistance to use.
How the exercise works
- Hold it with the padded bar behind your neck and your palms facing out.
- Slowly straighten your arms forward, letting the band draw your head forward, then pull your head back into full extension.
- Start at the lower neck. After 3 or 4 repetitions, raise your arms about 15° to work the middle of the neck, then about 30° for the upper neck.
- Once that's comfortable, holds of 5–10 seconds at each level can be added, as your chiropractor directs.
- If you feel neck or upper back pain as you straighten your arms, stop at that point.
Choosing a resistance
- Red: the light pull.
- Blue: the medium pull, about 11kg (25lb).
- Your chiropractor will tell you which to start on.
Good to know
- Some soreness in the neck and upper shoulders after the first sessions is common. It should be mild and settle within a few hours; if it doesn't, ease off and talk to your chiropractor.
- Before recommending it, your chiropractor checks for things that rule it out, such as an unstable neck or a past neck fusion.
- Fainting, or sudden changes in your speech or vision, during or after use need emergency care now — call 000. Stop using it and talk to your chiropractor if you feel dizzy.
