More Information

Its ridges follow a model of the healthy neck curve, so lying back on it stretches the neck into extension while gravity does the work. Your chiropractor sets which size you use and where it sits under your neck.

Who it's for

The cervical Denneroll is designed for a neck that has lost some of its natural forward curve, the cervical lordosis. Denneroll name car accidents, falls and poor posture as common contributors.

Where it sits — lower, mid or upper neck — depends on which part of the curve needs the stretch, so your chiropractor decides that from a posture assessment and, where needed, X-rays.

How a session works

  • Use it on the floor or a firm bench. A bed or a thick, spongy yoga mat is too soft for the stretch to work.
  • Lie on your back with the device behind your neck and your shoulders against its front edge, then slide the peak to the spot your chiropractor showed you.
  • Keep your legs flat. Your head should sit close to the floor without resting on it; a small towel under the device makes it taller, one under your head makes the stretch gentler.
  • Start at 3 minutes and add about a minute each session, building to 15–20 minutes by around the 17th session. If you can't reach a session's time, stay at it until you can.
  • To get up, roll onto your side first rather than lifting your head straight up.
  • How often you use it, per day or per week, is set by your chiropractor.

Choosing a size

  • Large (grey): about 175cm and taller, or a more flexible neck.
  • Medium (white): about 173cm and under.
  • Small (gold): children aged around 5 to 10, and adults new to the Denneroll or with a stiff neck.
  • A stiffer neck takes a smaller size whatever your height. Denneroll's guidance is to start small and move up a size if your head rests firmly on the floor, and your chiropractor will tell you which to start with.

Good to know

  • Made from EVA foam, with no latex or silicone.
  • Developed by Australian chiropractor Dr Adrian Dennewald. Denneroll is based in New South Wales and designs its devices to be used under the guidance of a chiropractor or other spinal health professional.
  • The first sessions can feel challenging, uncomfortable or mildly sore, which Denneroll describe as common. You may feel blood flow returning to your neck when you get up.
  • Stop and talk to your chiropractor before using it again if you notice increased pain, pain travelling down your arms, headache, dizziness, nausea, numbness, changes in your vision, weakness or loss of coordination.
